Understanding contracts

What should you think about before you sign a contract? Contracts are part of the everyday for most corporations. Sometimes you will be able to negotiate terms, but not always. Whatever the case, it’s important to understand some key principles before you decide to sign on the dotted line.

You’ll get an introduction to the legal basics of contracting. You’ll come away more confident in how to read and interpret the key clauses of a contract and get tips on how to avoid some common pitfalls and negotiate for better terms.

You'll learn about

  • What is, and is not, a contract
  • What to think about before you contract
  • Key terms to consider, step-by-step
  • Consumer guarantees, unfair terms and how you can protect your corporation

What we don’t cover: Some contracts are covered by specific legislation e.g. employment contracts and Indigenous land use agreements. This session covers general principles and does not cover these specific contracts.

What you’ll receive

  • Plain-language training from a lawyer with an opportunity to ask them questions
  • Copy of training recording and slide handout (recording accessible for 3 months)
  • Information on further resources and support
