Job description/overview
Menzies’ Global and Tropical Health Division is committed to tackling key areas of public health
concern, including Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), that impact on the health and wellbeing of people and communities across Northern Australia. Menzies has several
projects working with high-risk populations in northern Australia and Timor-Leste to better understand
and manage the factors that influence ARF and RHD diagnosis and treatment. Projects range from
developing a sustainable model of detecting RHD by training local non-expert practitioners using
echo-screening in remote health clinics in Australia and Timor-Leste, finding markers in the blood that
can be used to rapidly and accurately diagnose ARF, and improving treatment of ARF through clinical
trials.
The Research Assistant will work closely with healthcare workers at Royal Darwin Hospital and engage
with community stakeholders across Australia. The primary responsibilities include consultation and
liaison of research activities, supporting the First Nations Senior Research Fellow, data collection, and
participant recruitment. Additionally, the Research Assistant will be involved in feedback activities and
dissemination phases of the project under the direction of the Chief Investigators and Project Manager
and contribute to other teams and projects as required.
The role will focus on knowledge translation from our projects, ensuring that communities and
organisations have access to research findings in ways that are accessible and engaging, and the use
of the role holder’s cultural knowledge, lived experience, and understanding of community protocols
will be essential to the success of these projects.
