Special administration end - Narang Bir-rong Aboriginal Corporation (now in liquidation)
The Narang Bir-rong Aboriginal Corporation was placed into liquidation by Court order on 4 September 2026, ending the special administration which commenced on 9 June 2026.
The special administrators facilitated the wind-down of operations following the NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian’s decision to cancel the corporation’s accreditation as an out-of-home care provider under the Children’s Guardian Act 2019 (NSW). The cancellation resulted in the immediate termination of all funding agreements the corporation had with the Department of Communities and Justice. These decisions in effect resulted in the corporation’s business and operations ceasing. The special administrators made 62 employees redundant by 30 June 2026. A small remaining number of employees assisted the special administrators with the wind-down of on-site matters prior to their employment also becoming redundant.
On 18 August 2026, the special administrators made an application to the Federal Court of Australia to have the corporation wound-up on the ground of insolvency under section 526-5(i) of the CATSI Act. Following the payment of most employee entitlements the corporation had insufficient funds to pay other creditors in full. With the corporation no longer having an ongoing source of revenue, the special administrators formed the view that the corporation is insolvent and without any ongoing business or activities, it had no reasonable prospect of returning to solvency.
The Court orders were subsequently made on 4 September 2026. Mr Jack James and Mrs Paula Smith from the firm of Rodgers Reidy (WA) Pty Ltd have been appointed as the joint and several liquidators by the Court.
