Registrar’s update: Deregistration action completed for 494 corporations

The Registrar of Indigenous Corporations has completed deregistration action against a further 469 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations that failed to meet their reporting obligations under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act).

In May 2026, the Registrar deregistered 25 medium sized corporations and announced that 646 small sized corporations had been issued a notice of her intention to deregister them. 

Of the 646 small corporations that received a proposed notice of deregistration, 469 have now been deregistered. These are corporations that have failed to respond to the Registrar’s notice or take steps to address their outstanding compliance obligations.

The Registrar said, ‘Annual reporting and maintaining up-to-date records is a fundamental requirement of registration under the CATSI Act. These obligations support transparency, accountability and good governance for corporation members and other stakeholders’.

The Registrar encourages all corporations to ensure they meet their reporting obligations and keep their corporation details up to date to avoid compliance action.

Corporations registered under the CATSI Act are owned and controlled by their members. Members play an important role in the corporation's governance by exercising their rights and fulfilling their responsibility to hold the board accountable for the corporation meeting its compliance and governance obligations.

Members and key stakeholders should regularly check a corporation’s compliance with its reporting obligations. Whether a report is required but not yet lodged is shown in every corporation’s records on the public Register of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations.

Deregistration ends a corporation’s status as a legal entity. When a corporation is deregistered, this status is shown in its records in the public register. We encourage all stakeholders to check the register before dealing with a corporation.
