Registrar’s update: Action taken against 671 corporations for failing to lodge reports
The Registrar of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations, Tricia Stroud, has commenced the deregistration of 671 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations. These corporations have failed to lodge reports for the past 2 years.
25 medium sized corporations have been deregistered and no longer exist.
A further 646 small corporations have been issued with a notice of intention to deregister them. The corporations have been given 2 months to respond to the notice and lodge their overdue reports. If they don’t contact ORIC, it will be assumed they are no longer operating and they will be deregistered.
‘Where corporations are trying to do the right thing and meet their obligations, ORIC will assist them as far as possible,’ said Ms Stroud. ‘But failing to lodge reports for multiple consecutive years demands action.’
Other regulatory action
The Registrar is also considering other regulatory action for a further 122 corporations.
‘Reporting is the foundation of transparency and accountability. Failing to lodge reports deprives members and stakeholders – such communities, creditors and government agencies – of the ability to make informed decisions about a corporation,’ Ms Stroud said.

Background
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations are required to lodge annual reports within 6 months of the end of their financial year.
The reports a corporation is required to lodge depend on its size and income.
ORIC publishes a list of corporations that have not lodged reports for one or both of the last 2 reporting years. It is updated nightly and available on ORIC’s website.
A view of the Register of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations is free and publicly available. The corporation extract contains a summary of reporting activity and notices issued to the corporation.
