Special administration: Gunggandji Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC

The Registrar of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations, Ms Tricia Stroud has today placed the Gunggandji Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC under special administration.

Following the corporation’s annual general meeting in November 2022, disputes about directorship and between the directors have resulted in directors not fulfilling their duties under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act).

The governance disputes have resulted in the corporation unable to manage its financial affairs properly including staff not being paid on time. The corporation is also non-compliant with its reporting obligations.

Following a show cause notice procedure (as per section 487-10 of the CATSI Act), the Registrar determined that there were sufficient grounds under section 487-5 of the CATSI Act to place the corporation under special administration.

Mr Anthony Beven and Mr Tony Jonsson from Grant Thornton have been appointed as the joint and several special administrators until 1 September 2023.

As a result of the appointment, the board have been vacated and the special administrators will conduct the affairs of the corporation.
