Acting Registrar of ORIC

Release date: 20 December 2017

Mr Joe Mastrolembo has been appointed as Acting Registrar of the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC).

Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion was pleased to appoint Mr Mastrolembo to this important position and has congratulated outgoing Registrar Mr Anthony Beven on his successful 10 years in the role.

“Mr Mastrolembo is a great advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations who are striving to achieve the best results for their local communities,” Minister Scullion said.

“As the current Deputy Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, Joe has the experience needed to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations continue to have a strong advocate on their behalf.

“I am confident that Joe will continue to proudly champion Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations ensuring prosperity and employment in communities across Australia.

“A process will commence shortly to appoint the next Registrar on a permanent basis and I have committed to appoint an Indigenous Australian to this important role.

“My commitment to increase the number of Indigenous Australians in Government positions is an important part of ensuring our First Australians are represented and empowered within government agencies.

“I also wish to pay tribute to Joe’s predecessor, Mr Anthony Beven, and thank him for his many years of service and dedication to Indigenous corporations.

“Since Anthony was appointed to this position over a decade ago, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations have thrived, which has benefited communities across the nation.

“The results speak for themselves. Of the largest 500 Indigenous corporations registered under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006, revenue have increased to nearly $2 billion over the past decade – a 121 per cent increase.

“Employment figures in these corporations have also boomed with an 86 per cent increase in the past decade.

“Anthony’s achievements speak for themselves. I would like to wish him all the best for his future endeavours and again thank him for his service.”

Joe Mastrolembo’s acting position will run through until 30 June 2018, or until a substantive appointment is made.
