The Registrar of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations, Ms Tricia Stroud has placed the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation (ICN 3279) under special administration.
On 3 November 2023 the Registrar issued a notice to the corporation to show cause why a special administrator should not be appointed. Issues cited in the notice included ongoing disputes between the corporation’s directors, and the affect on the corporation’s operations and staffing.
On 14 November 2023 Mr Jack James and Mrs Paula Smith from Rodgers Reidy were appointed as the joint and several special administrators. Their appointment is until 17 May 2024. All board positions have been vacated and the special administrators will conduct the affairs of the corporation.
The special administration will provide the corporation with support to address the governance issues interfering with operations.
Background
The Registrar can appoint a special administrator when they determine there are sufficient grounds under section 487-5 of the CATSI Act.
Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation was registered on 27 November 1998. Its registered document address is Barmah, Victoria. The corporation is an appointed Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (Vic) which means it has cultural heritage responsibilities over its appointed area.
